Driving here, specifically

What we have learned about this county

  • Adams County runs about 1,184 square miles, but effectively all of its hospital capacity sits in the western fifteen miles - Thornton, north Westminster, Brighton and the Anschutz campus in north Aurora. The I-70 towns of the eastern county have clinics but no hospital, and no Medicare-certified dialysis facility in the county sits east of Commerce City. For a patient out past Bennett or Strasburg a dialysis standing order is a half-day round trip each of three days a week, not the one-hour turnaround a Thornton or Commerce City run allows.
  • The county wraps almost entirely around Denver International Airport, which is Denver jurisdiction rather than Adams. The airport and its buffer land break the road grid between the Brighton and Commerce City side of the county and the I-70 towns to the southeast, so the practical routes are I-76 to I-70 or the E-470 toll road. Straight-line distance badly understates drive time on any run that crosses that gap, and it is worth deciding up front whether a trip absorbs the toll or eats the extra minutes.
  • Adams County holds both extremes of the metro's medical geography at once. Three major campuses - UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Regional VA - sit within about a square mile in Aurora 80045, all three confirmed inside the Adams County line. Meanwhile HCA HealthONE Mountain Ridge in Thornton is, by its own statement, the only Level II trauma center in Adams County, serving the whole north metro. Discharge work in this county means knowing which campus and which building, not just which city.
  • The county's freight corridors run straight through the patient catchment. I-25 through Northglenn and Thornton carries the north metro commute, and I-270, I-76 and US-85 through Commerce City form the metro's main truck route past the Suncor refinery and the rail yards. Early dialysis chair times in Thornton and Commerce City land inside the worst of both, so a 5:30 a.m. shift means being on the road well ahead of the southbound build-up.
  • Winter splits the county in half. When a plains storm moves in, CDOT closes I-70 east of the metro and the eastern Adams County stretch toward Bennett and Strasburg drifts shut in ground blizzards, while Thornton and Westminster streets are merely wet. A Strasburg dialysis patient can be genuinely cut off on a morning when the same operator's Thornton and Northglenn runs go out on schedule.

Named, because "we serve the Denver metro" tells a discharge planner nothing. If your facility is not here, it only means we have not listed it yet.
