What we have learned about this county

• Byers and Deer Trail are both inside Arapahoe County, out on the eastern plains roughly 31 and 41 straight-line miles from HCA HealthONE Aurora. CMS lists only four hospitals anywhere in the county — HCA HealthONE Aurora, HCA HealthONE Swedish, AdventHealth Littleton and the Denver Springs psychiatric hospital — and every one of them is in Aurora, Englewood or Littleton. A standing dialysis chair time in the east county is an hour-plus of driving into Aurora each way, with nothing closer to fall back on.
• Colfax Avenue is the Adams-Arapahoe county line through Aurora: two points a few hundred feet apart across Colfax at Chambers Road land in different counties. That puts the entire Anschutz Medical Campus on E 16th Avenue — UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center — in ADAMS County, not Arapahoe, even though it is where most Arapahoe County specialty referrals and discharges actually go. Do not describe those three as Arapahoe County facilities.
• The county's inpatient capacity is bunched at its two ends. Swedish and Craig Hospital sit within a few blocks of each other in Englewood; AdventHealth Littleton anchors the southwest at 7700 S Broadway; HCA HealthONE Aurora and Spalding Rehabilitation anchor the east side off S Potomac St. The Centennial and Greenwood Village middle — where Holly Creek, Someren Glen, Brookdale Greenwood Village and much of the county's CCRC inventory sits — has only HCA HealthONE Centennial on E Arapahoe Rd, which is not separately certified as a hospital by CMS. Anything past its ER means driving a Centennial resident west into Englewood or east into Aurora.
